Q. What are Probiotics?
A.Probiotics are live bacteria that may confer a health benefit on the host.[1] In the past, there were other definitions of probiotics.

Q.Where do I get vitamin D?
A.You get most of your vitamin D from sunlight on your skin. This is because the vitamin forms under your skin in reaction to sunlight. Vitamin D is also found in a small number of foods, including:
oily fish
eggs
fortified foods that have had vitamin D added to them, such as fat spreads, breakfast cereals and powdered milk

Q.Who is at risk of vitamin D deficiency?
A.Most people can get all the vitamin D they need by eating a healthy, balanced diet and getting a little sun. However, the Department of Health recommends a daily vitamin D supplement for the following people:

• all children aged six months to four years (see below)
• all pregnant and breastfeeding women
• all people aged 65 and over
• people who aren’t exposed to much sun, for example people who cover up their skin for cultural reasons, or people who are housebound (stay indoors) for long periods of time.

Q. How do I get Vitamin D?
A. In children, exposure to the sun with normal outdoor activities is usually sufficient. There are few natural food sources with a significant amount of vitamin D- primarily fish oils, such as cod liver oil, and oily saltwater fish, such as cod, mackerel and sardines packed in oil. All adults should consider taking a daily multivitamin containing vitamin D. Some individuals may need additional over the counter vitamin D supplements or a high dose of vitamin D available only by prescription.

Q.How common is Vitamin D deficiency?

A.Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiency is common. It can occur in anyone, but those most likely to have it are the elderly; anyone with an intestinal malabsorption problem; anyone taking anticonvulsant medication; anyone who gets little exposure to the sun due to being indoors, using protective clothing or sunblock; those living in Northern latitudes; and those who never take vitamin supplements. Even in sunny New Mexico, vitamin D deficiency can occur.

Q.What happens if I don’t get enough vitamin D?
A. Vitamin D deficiency can impair calcium metabolism enough to cause osteoporosis, osteomalacia, or rickets, depending on age and the severity of deficiency. A condition called “secondary hyperparathyroidism,” which increases the rate of bone metabolism and causes loss of bone, often occurs. Vitamin D deficiency may also result in reduced muscle strength, increased risk of falling, and possibly increased risk of some types of cancer, such as colon cancer.

EXCELLENT CHOICE  (28/10/2011)
This is the best protein powder I have used. Make a smoothie with filtered water, raw protien powder, tart cherry juice concentrate, vit. C, and frozen berries in a blender
