L-Carnitine is an amino acid found in high concentrations in heart and liver tissues where, inside the cells (mitochondria), L-Carnitine helps transform fats into energy. L-Carnitine also facilitates the metabolism of carbohydrates and enhances ATP (i.e., energy) production.
L-Carnitine works synergistically with Co-Q10, an antioxidant and energy cofactor that is found in the inner membrane of the mitochondria.

Take 1 to 2 vegetarian Licaps per day, or as directed by your qualified health care consultant.

Q. What is Carnitine and where does it come from?

A. Carnitine is classified as an amino acid, although it is not an amino acid in the classic sense. Amino acids are generally used by the body for protein synthesis and/or as a neurotransmitter. Carnitine, which is closely related to B vitamins, is primarily used to facilitate the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells for energy production. This process provides muscular energy by burning fat, and also prevents fatty build-up around vital organs. Muscle cells that use the most energy, particularly the heart, can benefit by having adequate carnitine levels.

Natural Carnitine is found primarily in red meat, so vegetarians may need to supplement to ensure healthy levels in their bodies. Fish, poultry, milk and breast milk contain smaller amounts, while foods of plant origin contain very little, if any, L-Carnitine. On average, we consume about 100-300 mg dietary L-Carnitine every day. Our Carnitine is natural form product, synthesized in a laboratory by bacterial cultures, and is vegetarian due to the absence of any animal sources or by-products.

Q.Where does L-Carnitine occur in the human body?

A. L-Carnitine occurs naturally in the body, in total about 20-25 grams. Organs and cells with a high energy requirement such as the heart, supply. Our body is able to produce small quantities of L-Carnitine, if precursors (two essential amino acids, lysine and methionine) and cofactors (vitamins C, B3, B6 and iron) are readily available. An inadequate supply of any of these nutrients restricts the body`s ability to produce L-Carnitine.

Q.What role does L-Carnitine play for the heart?

A.The heart is our most important muscle, putting in an uninterrupted high performance. It obtains about 70% of its energy from fatty acids. This is why the heart also contains a high level of L-Carnitine – the uninterrupted transfer of fatty acids into the mitochondria is particularly vital in this organ. Since the heart cannot produce L-Carnitine, it is dependent on an adequate supply from the blood stream. This makes L-Carnitine an important nutrient for providing the heart with energy. A large number of studies have documented the beneficial effect of L-Carnitine on diseases of the heart muscle, fat deposition in the heart and cardiac arrhythmias. Accordingly, L-Carnitine can be used to maintain a healthy heart but cannot, under any circumstances, replace medical therapy.

Q.Can L-Carnitine be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

A.The body’s L-Carnitine requirements rise sharply during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and this requirement cannot easily be met by the diet. A large decrease in the concentration of L-Carnitine in the body is seen as early as the 12th week of pregnancy. Dietary supplements to increase the intake of L-Carnitine can therefore be very useful during pregnancy.

Q.Why is it difficult for elderly people to get sufficient L-Carnitine?

A.The body’s ability to produce L-Carnitine decreases with age. In addition, elderly people often reduce their meat intake for several reasons, which leads to a reduced dietary intake of L-Carnitine. Moreover, fat metabolism is slower in old age. Elderly people lose more protein from their muscles, and consequently lose valuable muscle mass. At the same time, more fat is deposited, and this puts an additional burden on the body. L-Carnitine can help to get the fat metabolism going again and to burn more fat. This is why L-Carnitine is an important nutrient for elderly people, helping to maintain their health, vitality and strength.

Q.Can vegetarians develop L-Carnitine deficiency?

A.A vegetarian diet is very low in L-Carnitine but also in the precursors to produce L-Carnitine in the body. It has been shown that vegetarians have lower levels of L-Carnitine in their blood. Reduced performance and rapid exhaustion of the muscles can be signs of low L-Carnitine levels.

Q.Which one is better for weight loss L-Carnitine OR Acetyl L-Carnitine?

A. L carnitine is better for weight loss, but a combination of both is recommended.

Q.Can I take L-Carnitine and Carnitine together?

A. Yes, you may take both the supplement together.

Q.I have lost some weight after taking this product. Can I take more than the recommended dosage to lose more weight faster?

A. While L-Carnitine is safe, we would not encourage you to consume more than what your body requires. 3000 Mg daily is sufficient to supply your body the L-Carnitine it needs. Taking more than the recommended dosage will not exponentially enhance its efficacy, plus it will not be economical. Your body will use the amount of L-Carnitine it requires & excrete the excess.

Q.I heard that L-Carnitine can help reduce cholesterol level. Is it true?

A. Yes. Apart from converting fat in the body into useable energy, L-Carnitine is also reported to lower the triglycerides in blood and increase the HDL (good cholesterol) level significantly, as published in “The Johns Hopkins Medical Journal”. A lower ratio of LDL (bad cholesterol) to HDL (good cholesterol) reduces the risk of a heart attack. L-Carnitine also has cardio-protective properties, which shield the heart from drug toxicity.

Q.Who in particularly needs this dietary supplement?

A.Basically it is suitable for all who are health-conscious. Since L-Carnitine is primarily found in red meat, this product is highly recommended for vegetarians and vegans. Those who are constantly lacking energy, smokers and drinkers, those with heart problems and those who are weight-conscious.

Q.Why do we need to take L-Carnitine supplement since our bodies can produce it?

A. The production of L-Carnitine is a very complex process that requires numerous vitamins and amino acids. This process unfortunately declines as we age; therefore it is always good to supplement our body with adequate amount of L-Carnitine especially if you are a vegetarian.

Q.What is the difference between L-Carnitine and D-Carnitine?

A.Carnitine exists in 2 forms – L form and D form. The difference is that they are molecularly structured in the mirror image of each other. However, D-Carnitine has toxic effects in relation to various body functions. Apart from being toxic, D-Carnitine also inhibits the actions of L-Carnitine. Hence it is imperative that your L-Carnitine supplement id free from D-Carnitine. L-Carnitine from Sigma-Tau  is 100% free from any residual D-Carnitine for safety and efficacy.

FAB  (16/10/2012)
L-Carnitine improves energy production, boosts the brain function and mental energy another plus point about this product is that does not contain any flow agents and it is better absorbed that other L-Carnitine as it is in liquid form. Good product go for it!
