Q.How does Lysine work?
A. Lysine seems to prevent the herpes virus from growing.

Q.What are the uses of Lysine?
A.Reducing recurrences, severity, and healing time of cold sores (herpes simplex labialis). Lysine seems to be effective when taken by mouth and also when applied as a cream to the skin.

Q.What are the precautions and warnings that should be taken?
A.Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of lysine during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
Kidney disease: There is one report of kidney disease linked with taking lysinesupplements. If you have a kidney disease, check with your healthcare provider before taking lysine.

Q.What are the dietary sources of Lysine?
A.Foods rich in protein are good sources of lysine. That includes meat (specifically red meat, pork, and poultry), cheese (particularly parmesan), certain fish (such as cod and sardines), nuts, eggs, soybeans (particularly tofu, isolated soy protein, and defatted soybean flour), spirulina, and fenugreek seed. Brewer's yeast, beans and other legumes, and dairy products also contain lysine. Many nuts also contain lysine along with arginine (lysine counteracts some of the effects of arginine). So if someone is trying to eat a diet rich in lysine to prevent HSV outbreaks, nuts would be a good choice.

Q. What are the symptoms of Herpes?
A.Symptoms may start with itching, tingling, inflammation and discomfort in the area affected. There can also be general flu-like symptoms with backache, headache, temperature, soreness and mild swelling of the lymph glands in the groin, armpits and neck. On ordinary skin (e.g. under pubic hair or on the shaft of the penis or scrotum, fingers, hands or on other parts of the body) you are likely to get blisters, spots or red bumps which may be quite painful. These burst and form sores, raw spots or ulcers which will crust over and new skin will form as they heal. On mucous membrane, e.g. under the foreskin and on the inner side of vaginal lips, the virus causes ulcers which heal directly into new skin. This does not normally result in scarring, although the new skin may be paler for a while. This first episode may last from 2 to 4 weeks. If you get recurrences, they will not be like the first illness. The first one is worse as you do not have specific antibodies to fight this virus. If you get a recurrence, the antibodies to fight the virus will be available much faster.
